Perception is a first stage exploration of embodied interaction, which will eventually develop into a thesis project. The final version of the project will consist of a real-time interactive installation that utilizes computer vision. The current version consists of a real-time system, which is driven by an ultrasonic ranging sensor. The sensor can detect the presence of visitors as they interact with video and sound through re-positioning themselves in the physical installation space. The concept of the project is to use the body as an interface to navigate through visual, aural and physical space. Specifically, the intent is to allow visitors to become aware of their bodies as a significant and natural component in interacting with a computational system. Margaret Watson is an artist/programmer/photographer who began working with virtual reality as a MFA student at the Electronic Visualization Lab at the University of Illinois of Chicago. Since graduating from UIC, she has been an invited lecturer at various virtual reality facilities and exhibited internationally at computer graphics events such as SIGGRAPH, ISEA and Ars Electronica. She has also been an Artist in Residence at the Ars Electronica Center in Linz, Austria and at the Center for Advanced Visualization and Interaction in Aarhus, Denmark. At the University of Aarhus, she developed and taught interdisciplinary courses in virtual reality as a visiting professor. Currently, she is pursuing an MS in Engineering in the ACE program at UC Irvine. Her graduate work is focused on the exploration of embodiment in creating interactive installations using sensor and computer vision technology. For more information: turing.ace.uci.edu/~watson |
